Summary: Before there was ever even talk about putting Lucifer back into his cage, Sam was working on a different kind of prison.

How they got here after all is anyone’s guess.

It seemed far away – unreachable with the right amount of knowledge to prevent it, but once again it turns out that fate… well, it’s a fickle thing.

Sam looks around the run down city, prime long gone along with the flourishing business and wants to laugh at the irony of mankind. Dean’s slowly built trust to him again over the last half year and made plans how to avoid this, since they very well knew it was coming. His big brother has faith in him again – a thing he’s worked hard and harder still to gain with little steps – trusts him to not give in, to not be tempted, to not say yes. Sam relishes in the feeling of comfort and family and the bond they share again, it’s fragile, but has been on the mend for quite some time already.

He hates more than anything else in this world to dash these hopes, to betray this trust once again and to wound his brother in a way he has never consciously managed in all his life. But he’s prepared and while he knows that there might have been a different solution, he doesn’t see another way that’s as secure and fool-proof.

So he suddenly turns around and grasps Dean by his shoulders, bumping their foreheads together in an intimate gesture they haven’t really used in years and whispers  ‘I’m sorry, Dean.’

Before his brother can react, can process whatever he means by that, Sam looks up into the rain-heavy skies and shouts the one thing that will damn him to all eternity.

“Yes.”

The rush is heady and magnificent, even if Sam can feel his soul coming apart at the seams at the touch of power and unequalled greatness settling inside – alongside his skin, stretching the fabric of his very being tight and merciless. What the adversary doesn’t know though, what nobody knows is that Sam turned his body around. His flesh was supposed to be a vessel of great power and potential, beautiful and strong beyond measure, befitting to rule the world. But he’s been working his biggest weakness – his destiny – into his greatest weapon. His body is now another prison of a cancerous poison that will render any angel unable to cross the boundaries of his decaying insides ever again. The power of the light sets it off and by the time the Devil notices what he’s done, he’ll be trapped in an empty helpless shell, devoid of power, of movement, of life – a useless heap of bone and flesh and skin, withered beyond measure and robbed of any vitality. Sam dreads the endlessness, the agony that will accompany his very being until the end of time, the only outlet for the rage of the betrayer who’s been betrayed once again, this time not only for humanity, but by humanity itself. He has no illusions as to what will happen to his self once the boundaries of this trap, his cage are clear. The only thing he knows is there is no getting out of this one. No prophecy to speak of the second coming, not another chance.

Give the Devil his due they say… Sam has given his everything to amend for his wrongs.

The apocalypse will happen without one of their major players and he hopes dearly that this is enough of a chance for humanity to fight. To find a way to survive what’s been set in motion so long ago.

His part is over.
