Warnings/Spoilers: Coda to 5X18-100. Did anyone else think something went funky in the Green Room?

 

A/N: Guys, I just wanted to say… I love this fricking episode. I adore it. Still, my head couldn’t help and think… what if.

 

Summary: Contrary to popular belief, Michael does not like being cruel or ruthless. He just wants his brother back.

 

 

 

Michael looks at the boy and just about refrains from letting his real feelings slip into his expression. The words that come out of his mouth – a foreign and uncomfortable concept – are just what Sam needs to hear right now, dredged up from a life-time of memories about this young man that is the centre and beacon in all of them. The deception tugs a little inside Michael’s chest and that kind of bodily reaction is new too, but he knows where this is going, has seen it countless times through all those millenia of watching and waiting for this unravel. He knew after he’d heard that yes, that final acceptance ring through his very core that it can only end one way. That is why he can’t bring himself to deny the boy this small comfort, a few moments of peace with his brother at his side and the prospect of mending their relationship in a way that will let them live the rest of their lives with nothing inbetween them, no matter how short the time might be. It does not affect the course of events laid out in the near future and it’s not yet his time to reveal himself and stand up to fight, so Michael uses the little margin in the unfolding plans to grant  Sam this small reprieve. Besides, seeing hope and faith light up again in his little brother’s eye warms him in a way that makes this act just the slightest bit selfish, too. This is what separates him from all of his brothers and sisters in heaven, this kind of thing close to humanity, but not quite. This is what makes him the only one to be able to defeat Lucifer and strike him down in the end, because he is not the mindless dutiful weapon they make him out to be. He can play his part no doubt and appear that way, like he did before. But in the end, he is the only one that will be able to get into his brother’s head in a way that is both dangerous and his only advantage. It is the way they have both been made by their father.

It is not yet time, so until then, Michael stays silent and pretends, taking just a little bit of comfort in the connection these two brothers just found again, even though it’s not enough. It will never be enough until he meets Lucifer on the battlefield. He knows his duty and will die for it, but those few moments – when they will face each other and just look and take their fill without destiny or duty or the world around, just them – those moments are what he lives for.

In the cab of the truck, catching a glimpse of his real brother in that smiling human face beside him, under the stormclouds rolling in overhead as they drive through the night, Michael is content.

Because this… is the point of no return.

When I said I was interested in thoughts and ideas concerning the episode, THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I MEANT.

I think this is a great, great idea and really nicely written. You have a good point here - I can definitely see how this could be close to home, especially in a show like Supernatural.

But I'm glad that I struck a chord there.. I mean, it just wouldn't leave me because he DID say yes, didn't he. And i thought, what if Michael was already there.
I don't really think there's going to be canon in this (though I've been Kripked so often lately, it's uncanny) but I like the idea of tying up loose ends like that and getting that show on the road in... *GASP* only four more episodes!

*blushes back* You're welcome! Now that I think of it, this also explains how non-angel Dean was able to kill Zachariah; so far I'd been torn between the super-special-pointy-weapon or the vessel-is-close-enough explanations.

Ehehehe. Well, I gathered for now that the angels actually have to be there accept the approval so to speak, but I can't help but think that Michael can't be as dumb as not getting that while Sam and Dean might have made it outside of the Green Room, they are not actually VANISHED there. plus, yeah, ganking an angel, even with special angel superweapon? Not funny. And he said yes, damnit. Hmmm. I think the show leaves a lot of the mythology leading up to the finale open to such interpretation for the very reason of us not BEING SURE. Ehhhe.
