FRIDAY

Well, since I live about 45 mins out of Mannheim and was going to stay with Birdie who lives IN Mannheim, I had a leisurely train ride (with a lot of costume parts and a really heavy beamer) to Birdie’s apartment where we set up shop for the rest of the weekend.

Registration went in a pinch, aside from a few minor miscommunications, small delays and schedule changes; I have to hand it to Rogue Events that the organisation of the weekend was exceptional for the most part, even for the poor guys that didn’t have upgrades. Getting those Rubies, however, was worth every single cent (can I just say, Queueing Privileges?).

Friday got a lot more awesome though, when we finally met up with our beloved fellow nurplettes and started to work our excitement up by talking about the impending series finale and the upcoming con-weekend. What was most fun though, was watching all the suit-clad businessmen checking in and out of the Dorint Hotel (fantastic venue btw) look at the rapidly multiplying fangirls with growing trepidation and confusion. I know we’re a very particular portion of the human species, but I always enjoy encounters with the Normalos. *lol*

After going home to dress up for the Fairytale-gone-bad Disco party (I was Mary with a little lamb and Birdie the big bad wolf) we went back to the hotel and talked outside the Disco room until they let us in. While we up on the first floor, talking, word travelled that Mark and Fred had come down to get a drink at the open bar on the ground floor. A fangirl rush immediately filled a lot of drinks and we watched them mingle through the glass rails of the stairs and thought up jokes that started with ‘So… Two Demons walk into a Bar…’

When the Disco finally started, the music this year was waaaay better than last year, and with ‘Eye of the Tiger’, ‘Back in Black’ and LedZep we went and had a lot of fun dancing, getting into the mood for our Very Supernatural Weekend. Decided to skip out early though because we were meeting at six in the morning to watch the two-hour finale together before and gruelling and exciting convention day!

SATURDAY

Photobucket

Meet Birdie and Cat holding up Sam and Dean, the Alpacas, in the camera test before the stage talks. Those two arrived just in time for the convention on Friday afternoon after almost missing their post office and went everywhere with us to experience this awesome weekend.

Our Saturday started way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay early, because Birdie and I were hosting a SPN-finale party to watch the two episodes together. Suffice to say, we were all bleary eyed at the beginning of Let it Bleed because of getting up at half five in the morning, but the roof was on fire by the time the credits rolled. Completely hyped up we went to the hotel where the opening ceremony and Jensen’s panel was waiting for us. Sitting in the audience, playing with the camera men doing a pre-screening and then BOOM the guests were there, I think the collective fangirl heart rate in the room picked up to about 200 in 2.5 secs.

JENSEN

Jensen stayed immediately after the opening and started to walk around, feeling the stage and smiling at the audience (of course no one dared to cue for questions yet) he was very appreciative of the venue and geeked about how cool it was to be on such a big stage. His comment was: “You always see people walking around on these stages, not looking until they walk right off *looking down the edge of the stage* Don’t let me walk off!”
When asked about which MotW he’d like to be directing he said: Todd Stashwick (a/n: Dracula in Monster Movie) because he’s such a great actor. Concerning the question of Dean’s amulet coming back he wasn’t sure but gave us the motto:
“Things in Supernatural are never EVER dead. Not even characters” and he hopes that they can explore these kinds of story openers more in the future even though they don’t have enough time to tell all the stories they want.
For the Dark Angel peeps, Yes, he did play the piano himself, learning the first eight bars of the song really meticulously until a professional took over for the rest. He also agreed that there’s a lot of similarities between Dean and Captain Kirk – “I think he definitely sees Sam in Spock, weird hair/cute ears’ if he had to describe Dean in terms of movie characters though, it would be an eclectic mix of Captain Kirk and Jack Sparrow. Which probably goes hand in hand with his assessment that if Dean had ever gone to university, he would have studied sororities and possibly automechanics.

Photobucket

If he could change anything about the show, he would like to have longer lasting recurring characters and make Jared shorter (as you will notice, the size-thing is kind of a running gag that goes on and on and on) “Because you know, that would mean that this 6’1’’, 190 pounds Texan wouldn’t be THE SMALL GUY.” Mark apparently, when faced with looking up to Jared while filming just goes “Bloody Hell”

Photobucket

There was more questions, but we got called away to get our autographs, which made Jared beam at Birdie’s handdrawn autograph card for him and Cat swoon from his incredible smile.

FRED AND BROCK

As ever, J2 of course were who people came to see, the other guest were what people came to love (even though we still love the boys most of all). Fred was a natural on stage, he came out and started talking right of the bat about his night out with the boys and thankfully finding the stupid line before he drank himself over it, so he could be fresh for us in the morning.
He told us about his week in London following A6 which he spend mostly in theatres and concert halls. He went to a concert of Händel&Vivaldi in the little church St. Martin of the Fields, which was a strange experience, because he was the youngest person in the room, but it got really weird when the little old lady sitting next to him turned around and exclaimed:
“You’re the Yellow-Eyed Demon!”

Photobucket

Suffice to say the audience was roaring with laughter when Brock finally arrived a little later. He talked about how he went to audition for Young Dean and was ultimately chosen by Jensen as the ‘right fit’, that his favourite scene on the show took place in the closet and that he would very much like to come back for another episode, portraying Dean’s first meeting with Lisa if it was up to him. Overall, he seemed content to sit back a little and let Fred do his thing and laugh at the goofy stories just as much as we did.

Photobucket

Fred had a lot to tell about how he “thought I was playing the janitor” when asked about how perceived his role as the ubervillain and that it’s virtually impossible to see through the yellow contacts which forced him to sit in the corner blind in breaks because most of the time it was too much hassle to get them in and out again between scenes. The fireplace in Jake’s persuasion scene got dubbed ‘Demontripper’ by him and he had the most fun playing dead at the season two finale because everyone else was half-way to celebrating the wrap already and J2 were apparently quite tipsy that day.

MARK

Mark had a little bit of a hard time at his panels because we asked him so many questions that he’s contractually not allowed to answer. He mourned the fact deeply because it’s been making him such a consummate liar to the fans, but I got the impression that he was secretly gleeful about it just a little bit. Overall he seems to be the type to become very protective of his characters who doesn’t like to be put in boxes which is very adorable.

Also, he definitely had one or two geekgasms during the weekend about his appearance in ‘Dr. Who’ mainly because he got to say the famous lines ‘Bigger on the Inside’ and ‘Dr…Who?’ and the apparent fanboy heaven he floated in made him all the more endearing. Consequently, he filled us in that his personal version of hell is pretty close to the one Crowley thought up, although he’s quite sure that the writer’s designed it as a nod to both ‘Beetlejuice’ and the poor convention-going, queue-tortured fangirls of the world.

Photobucket

He is however, also aware of the striking similiarities between Supernatural’s Crowley and his namesake of Good Omen’s and at lunch with his good friend Neil Gaiman talked about how he would be a good candidate to play the latter as well, should the film project on Good Omen’s pull through (which made another fangirl heaven pop up right then and there, I kid you not!)

His overall take on the season was an amused anecdote about how the writer’s came up to him mid-season with the news: “We’re going to kill you, but DON’T PANIK!” while he answered concerning the finale and the turn about on his character’s relations to the rest of the ensemble was: “Was I surprised? I read the script.”
He was very interested into our reactions to the finale and encouraged us to watch as soon as possible (‘There’s something called the Internet. USE it.’ – ‘The Hotel Internet crashed because of us’ was the answer from the fans. He laughed)
There were a few discussions about how Crowley is not a bad guy, but there’s going to be more on that in the Sunday panel so I’ll spare you the details for now.

Photobucket

On a really cheerful note, Mark emphasized that he enjoys going to conventions very much because he gets feedback and contact with the fans in a way that’s normally not possible to achieve for a television production (the way it is for theatre for example) and that it’s a ‘full circle’ to be able to meet us as much as we’re able to meet him. I love that guy.

RICHARD

Certainly one of the fan favourites of the weekend, Richard took the stage in stride including all the questions that went wild through his entire career.
We got to know that he’d like the trickster back on the show, Gabriel to be taller, thinks the ‘probing alien-prank’ was the best they came up with, Sam and Dean would have been zapped into America’s Next Topmodel next and that he’d like the ability to call scantily clad women into existence with a snap of his fingers.

Photobucket

Also, he apparently doesn’t like to stay on stage a whole lot of the time which is why he was walking through the audience for half the panel, soon to be accompanied by Mark who crashed his panel with the words ‘Are you ever going to be funny?’
The two of them proceeded to answer questions together or find people who wanted to ask one and obviously had a blast together, which was probably the reason why they didn’t manage to make anymore appearances without the other in the panels of the weekend.
Most memorably, Richard also told us the famous ‘train story’ because he spend the week between AECON and A6 in Amsterdam with Jared and Gen. We’ll get back to that on the Sunday report.

JARED

I probably can’t put more than half of it in here, but Jared’s panel was hands down one of the highlights of the convention (for me at least) because it started becoming awesome with the first step he took on stage (getting standing ovations from the fans) to the second he disappeared behind the curtain again. It was very endearing how he strutted out with an over-the-top catwalk and took off his scarf and jacket instantly getting cat calls that made him pretend to hide behind the table for a moment. Then he came back out with a beaming smile, lots of attention for us and ready to field every question that was thrown at him.

Photobucket

He talked about how he loved dubbing for the Anime and is very much blown away by the fan response, but that it was quite difficult to find s1 Sam again after so many years of developing the character and going new directions with him. When asked about doing a marathon (since there was one going on just outside the hotel) he told us that he’d been training to run a marathon before but had a few problems with his knee being to bendable in the wrong direction and therefore not good for the long run (we even got a nice visual of that, which was slightly disturbing lol).

He likes the original Star Trek series best out of the franchise and reiterating the question Jensen had been asked in his solo panel earlier, he told us that Sam’s a mix between Spock and Davy Jones, what with the live wire hair and all. He demonstrated that he's very aware of The Hair later in the panel when his continued rubbing over his skalp put it into disarray and when the giggles started out in the audience immediately asked: "Is it my hair?" and laughed adorably when he fixed it.

Photobucket

We got to know that the original plan for the s4 premiere was for Sam to rescue Dean from hell, which they obviously changed later on. However, when a fan questioned about how we know now how Sam got out of Lucifer’s cage in s6 and why we hadn’t seen a Handprint on him, Jared promised us that we’d get to see it in S7 because Sam was apparently “pulled out by his ass” – tick tock. YES.

In terms of acting challenges he had to overcome, being required to play against yourself is very high on his list of ‘The Hard Stuff’ because he bases his reactions as an actor on the way his opponent plays the lines (here we got another exemplified demonstration, Jared is obviously a very method interviewee) and that – when playing against himself – he didn’t know the reactions he was going to get until he’d played both parts and then had to remember what he’d done in the first to answer accordingly. Another acting challenge however was ‘bad acting’ as seen in ‘The French Mistake’ talking about which he made his own head spin by analysing that ‘It was in fact Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean, playing Jared and Jensen playing Sam and Dean, and yeah so many layers there… uhm… O_O’

However, he doesn’t think that Sam’s always the little brother and that sucks, because Sam’s kind of like a big brother to other characters on the show that have a hard time at the moment, so there’s a balance. Somehow it went on to Cas/Misha and when a baby started crying loudly in the audience, Jared looked up, smirked and said:
“It’s ok, I’ll stop talking about Misha soon.”

Photobucket

When asked about whether the set has ever been cleared for him like it had for Jensen in AHBLII to play such an emotional scene, Jared explained to us that “There’s two occasions of a set to be cleared, one is when guest stars come on the show for nude scenes, then only the people who really need to be there are on set with the female actresses, male actresses (we’d like to get to know those better, lol) with little clothes on are in the scene so they don’t feel uncomfortable. The other is when there’s a really trying emotional scene, which for me was the final shot of ‘Heart’.” Everybody went all ‘awwwww’ of course.

On a tangent to that, Jared got asked if he’d like Sam to have a real lasting love interest and he said, of course he’d be up for that (if he could change something on the show, he’d have kept Dean from killing Ruby and exorcised her instead so he could have kept her as his girlfriend a little longer *wink*) but the odds of that actually happening are rather dire. By now, the show has developed in a way that doesn’t really leave room for that kind of thing for the brothers and it’s also been a very influential plot for Sam’s character that “everyone he ends up wanting a relationship with, guy or girl, ends up dying.” – My Jared, that’s an interesting slip you got there. Is there more to Sam meeting the first male crossroads demon after all??

The panel wrapped with Jared giving us some hilarious and hands on demonstrations of good and bad stage crying and television punching the poor unsuspecting water pitcher, which made up for some interesting behind-the-scenes glimpses into an actors work.
He took his exit from the stage, professing his love for Germany and that he really enjoyed coming here for us and made the place roar with glee.

JASON

Photobucket

Saturday wrapped with a few original and dazzling costumes for the Heaven&Hell disco party and of course Jason Manns’ concert beforehand. He was really impressed at how many people wanted to come and even made the organizers issues more tickets than originally planned to give everyone the possibility to attend. While he certainly delivered again on his amazingly feel-good and unique acoustic style, his guest stars were almost more of a highlight. Fred and Richard both came on between sets to cameo with ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ and ‘I only love your when I’m drunk’ (one of Richard’s own concoctions) which made the place roar.

Photobucket

The most remarkable feat of the evening, however, was Jason coming on with his Cohen-cover ‘Hallelujah’ and the whole audience starting to sing along with him until just stopped singing and strummed his guitar, listening to us in beaming awe. When we were done making music together, he marvelled: “You guys are amazing! Someone sneaked a choir in here, you just did that thing in three voices, just great.” And proceeded to make us sing along with some more songs and easy refrains which was a lot of fun.

Ok, that was the first day, ultimate write-up of the Sunday panels and what happened to make Doug kneel on the stage and Brock sit in the hot seat coming soon!!

Thank you so so so so much for posting this! You're descriptions and commentary are perfect. I almost feel like I was there.. Well, enough so I can IMAGINE that I was anyway :)

As much as I would love too, I'll Probably never make it to a convention. This is quite possibly the next best thing {{HUGS}}

That's sooo sad, but I completely understand your plight. I mean, up until a year ago I wouldn't have thought I'd get anywhere near one either (much less with J2 in it) aside from maybe getting crazy enough to go to one of the UK cons... sadly I won't able to go to AECON3 because i'm in the US of all things at that time (maybe I'll get the chance there, but that's a big MAYBE)

Either way I'm glad I could brighten your day and get you the 'Experience' as close as possible.

I did! For me it was only 14 euros to spend and it was worth it. It kind of closed my AECon2 PCD! Here, if you wish a link to the vid I made.

Vid is crapy but sound is good, I think. After the first song I mostly recorded his talks. Loved the facts that he paid all the drinks for the guys who came! I will certainly write more about him. He such a nice guy. ;)

hi there - i love your line, "...J2 of course were who people came to see, the other guest were what people came to love..." because it's so true!

Well, yes, it was like last year, we were first disappointed of course that J2 weren't coming but for a first con, it was actually great because the stars could mingle without stress (or get stupidly drunk like Chad) and it was very relaxed and I think a lot of people brought this atmosphere back with them. So i was looking forward to the other guests just as much as J2 and it totally paid off! LOL

it's true that the stress factor is decreased exponentially when the Js (or even one J) aren't present. (interesting tidbit about chad...reminiscent of a similar con i attended a couple of years ago but w/a diff guest, lol).
but seriously, whether or not the Js are in attendance, the other guests rock and exceed our expectations.

I mean, I was like O_O when Jensen was announced as first guest and couldn't believe my luck when Jared came on later, because I seriously don't think I'll have the chance to meet them again... BUT, standing in the middle of the hotel foyer after registration at my first con last year when Birdie went 'Don't turn around but MARK (Pellegrino) IS STANDING RIGHT BEHIND YOU!"... COOLEST FEEL EVER. lol.

LOL *QUIT STARING AT JIM* was my internal mantra last year. But you're right after a day or two of exposure you go like, oh, here you are, having fun? And I kinda take pride in letting the actors get that kind of reprieve of not getting stared at ALL THE TIME. Which is why I pointedly didn't get out the camera when Mark (Sheppard) sat down right next to me during his panel, instead we exchanged a smirk and that was it. Or when Fred came up the stairs and had to walk right through our queueing line we were like 'Good Morning' 'Good Morning' 'How are you?' 'Great thanks, see you later'
I cherish those moments where we can make them feel like normal people who share the experience with us a lot more than the scream-giggling feel (although that's nice too).
